In conversation with Mara, we explored her inspiration for the Spring 2022 collection:

I always approach spring as a rebirth. Winter is that introspective period of cultivation, spring is the opportunity for new beginnings. We always come at it with a perspective of celebration and joy. This spring collection is an unapologetic connection to ownership of the body with the strong silhouettes and bright saturated colors that the brand is known for—neon is back! Any opportunity that is available to celebrate health, vibrancy, a beating heart, and a full life is so important right now. We're living in so much conflict and contradiction so these moments are essential.

Coming behind the lens expanded an opportunity for me to be creative within the brand that was really necessary. In my role as creative director, I have to continually be creatively inspired. When I started shooting the collections it opened up this whole other connectedness to the work for me. By literally looking through the lens at it I can see how the clothing is moving and where the flaws are in a different way. Rachel Wang, who styled the shoot, and I have been collaborating for about four years. She is somebody who can see past my sentimentality towards a collection and make the clothes register the best that they can.

I made all of the shoes from our vintage shoes and shoes we've used in past. I collected tons of vintage jewelry—eighties gold-toned pieces—and used them to build the shoes and the bustiers. I love the idea that people can make these pieces at home. Everything was found through vintage dealers and flea markets. We also featured jewelry by Laura Lombardi and Pamela Love.

I look forward to the hope of spring and the whole energy of people coming through something and out the other side. In winter you isolate and spring is the beginning of reconnecting. It's like slipping life in between the cracks. I love that. I think we're all so desperate for reconnections right now and that spring means more now than it probably ever has.
